How To Play

1) Decide how many tasks the players have to complete to get a reward.

2) Chose the reward, tell the players and stick to it. This is up to you, whether it's 'You chose - we walk to the park or the river" or "You chose - ski holiday or snorkelling"! 

3) Select the task cards you need. Add your own on the blank cards if you can't find the ones you want. Don't forget the Excuses! cards - to save on arguments. Maybe you'll allow swaps.

4) Shuffle the cards you've selected, hold them out face-down. Now the players draw their cards and the negotiation begins. Just like real life!

The Smartphone-Free Choice

They're safe

  • Pocket Money Cards are UKCA and CE safety-certified.
  • We only use food-safe inks and we don't use plastics. You could even eat the cards. We don't recommend the taste though.
  • We tested flammability by holding a card for 5 seconds in a naked candle flame. The card crinkled, but it wouldn't catch light.
  • Our cards have rounded corners to guard against paper cuts and protect little eyes.

  • Forest Stewardship Council paper is used to make the cards and packs, so you know that Pocket Money Cards are made from sustainable source materials.

What ages?

  • Harvard University's Grant study found that children engaged with housework chores before the age of 14 become the most fulfilled, healthy adults. We think Pocket Money Cards are best for 4 to 10 year-olds. 
  • Pocket Money Cards can also help students away from home for the first time, flatmates and house-shares.

Do the cards work?

  • We can't guarantee miracles, but sometimes we can help them happen.
  • Just like your family, the game rests on co-operation, so you have to set the scene. Call a family gathering once a week. Get everyone around a table, no phones, no distractions and talk about what good things everyone did that week, what's happening next week, what they all enjoyed and what needs to be done in the week to come, to keep everyone comfortable, warm, fed and happy. That's when the game comes into its own. 
  • It's all about balance, calmness, stability, encouragement and mutual support. Creating a home where everyone helps each other to be the best they can be, together.
